Book List

As I mentioned in a previous post, one of my goals for next year is to read 50 of the “100 Greatest Books” of all time. After looking through a couple of lists online and dismissing all that included the Twilight series I settled on Time Magazine’s selection.

So my first 25 choices from the list are as follows…

01: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey [read]
02: White Teeth by Zadie Smith [read]
03: The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon [read]
04: Atonement by Ian McEwan [read]
05: Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut [read]
06: The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood [read]
07: Call It Sleep by Henry Roth
08: The Death of the Heart by Elizabeth Bowen
09: Possession by A.S. Byatt
10: An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser
11: The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West
12: Neuromancer by William Gibson
13: The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
14: White Noise by Don DeLillo [read]
15: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
16: Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
17: The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing
18: Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
19: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
20: The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles
21: Beloved by Toni Morrison
22: Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
23: A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh
24: Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
25: Naked Lunch by William Burroughs

I will update the list as I make my way through the books. I have already started reading One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Wish me luck!

  1. Great idea. I want to do the same with 1001 books you have to read before you die, and the same with 1001 movies you have to see, but then again I do not have the time. I can’t reaad anything else than school books. Luckily I get to read alot of classics there though : )

  2. “dismissing all that included the Twilight series I settled on Time Magazine’s selection”

    lol!

I’ve only read 5 of those books on the TIME list. How terrible! :( *hangs head in shame*

    • I couldn’t help but dismiss those lists… Those books were anything but works of impressive literature!

I’ve read 8 on the list already, and was considering counting those in my 50, but I thought that sort of defeated the purpose! Which 5 have you read?

  3. Ahhhh the 50 book challenge. I did this for this year, although I was just choosing my own books as opposed to going with a list someone else made up, as I am exceptionally choosy with my literature! It’s pretty tough – you have to read pretty much a book a week and even for someone who reads a lot, it’s still quite a commitment to make … I made it to forty two but have hit a wall with Ulysses, I doubt I’ll even have that finished by December, never mind have made it to fifty. But it’s a good thing to do! I used to do random sweeps of the classics section in Waterstones and come out with things I’d never have looked at normally but ended up really, really enjoying. Anyway, best of luck, I hope you enjoy One Flew.., it’s pretty damn good!

    • I am enjoying One Flew.. already, so far so good! It took a couple of pages to warm up to the style, but I think I’m going to like it :)
I had thought about the fact that it’s basically a book a week… It’s going to be hard! Argh!
You’re such a literature buff, any suggestions of books I might like? <3

      • Lol literature buff, hardly! But I do enjoy recommending books lol, off the top of my head I think you would possibly enjoy Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor. I have a feeling you’d also like Alice Hoffman, she does beautiful, subtle stories about love and magic, maybe The Probable Future would be a good one – it’s not a “classic” at all but it is lovely. That’s assuming you haven’t read these already!

I know what you mean about the style of One Flew.., I had to sit down and have a good long run at it before I could really get the flow of it, totally worth it though. I have never seen the film but the comment below is making me curious …

Anyhoo, good luck with your list! I’ll look forward to reading your updates :)

      • I have read 100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez and loved it, so I should definitely check out Love in the time of Cholera… Thanks for the tips!

  4. Fantastic list! I found it really difficult to get through White Teeth, although I have spoken to people who really loved it.

Have you seen the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest with Jack Nicholson? Apparently the author of the novel was furious at the filmmakers for the changes they made!

    • My best friend has been encouraging me to read White Teeth for ages. She likes a few other books by that same author too, and we have the same sort of style in favourite books so I’m hoping I will enjoy it!

I have seen the film, and loved it. Of course it was a strange film, and left me with a really odd feeling afterwards. I’m halfway through the book and it doesnt seem too different to the storyline of the film but perhaps the ending is the major change? I haven’t seen the film in a long time though, so my memory is dusty!
