Q&A with Peter Vranes of Lapureté

Recently, (via Twitter of all places) I was introduced to exciting new natural Australian skincare brand Lapureté. I was lucky enough to receive their amazing range to trial and review – and I will post my thoughts soon. In the meantime, here is an insightful question & answer session with brand founder Peter Vranes.

First of all, can you tell us a little bit about Lapureté and the concept of the brand?

With the rise of Botox, we could see that there was a growing demand from the public for treatment of wrinkles. We felt that there had to be a better alternative than sticking needles in your face and injecting a toxin. We put a team together and spent a lot of time researching available and new treatments. We came across a plant in Western Africa called Okuru that the locals have been using for centuries as a nutritional food and for its skin benefits. The locals are known for their beautiful skin. The science behind Okuru was discovered by French scientists who found that peptides (called ogliopeptides) in the plant penetrate the skin and work in a similar way to Botox by minimising muscle contractions – the cause of wrinkles. Monash University heard about Okuru and performed their own independent clinical trials to test whether it really works. They found that not only does it work, but the average participant in the trial had a 27% reduction in expression lines after only 4 weeks. Lapurete treats more than just wrinkles. There are natural actives, like Okuru, that target sagging skin, eye bags, dark cirles, age spots, dry skin, enlarged pores and UVA damage.

How do your products fill a need in the industry?

Botox is growing by 30% per annum in Australia, however with the growth of Botox there are more people looking for an alterantive. Lapureté provides the solution by not only effectively treating wrinkles, but also other skin concerns to provide a more youthful appearance than just Botox alone. The range is made with natural ingredients without any parabens or petrochemicals so it is not only effective, but safe to use as well. As a Chemical Engineer, the purity of the range is something that i am very passionate about.

What are your thoughts on the difference between holistic and technologically advanced skin care?

Traditionally these have been mutually exclusive. Either a customer would purchase a natural skin care line that was pure and safe to use, but lacked anti-ageing efficacy, or they would purchase a synthetic range with potentially good efficacy, but contained ingredients such as parabens and petrochemical derivatives. One of the main dricving forces behind lapurete was the desire to resolve this compromise. We felt that it was possible to have a natural skin care range with as good as or better efficiancy than the top end synthetic ranges. We are pioneering the concept of the natural cosmeceutical in Australia and overseas.

What would be the first product you would recommend people try from your range?

The range is designed to be used as a set. It is a simple 3 step system;

Day: Step 1 – Cleanser. Step 2 – Eye cream. Step 3 – Day cream.

Night: Step 1 – Cleanser. Step 2 – Eye cream. Step 3 – Night cream.

So, the best result is achieved when all the products are used together. For example, there’s no point treating crow’s feet with the eye cream but having no UVA protection for the rest of your face and causing more damage. However, sometimes people only want to try a single product first and that product would depend on what concers them the most.

What is next for Lapureté?

We have another 2 ranges we are devloping at the moment. They are both cosmeceutical and both under the banner of “Nature’s Alternative to Cometic Surgery™”. We have kept them under wraps at the moment until they are launched which will be in the next 12 months.

If you would like to know more about the Lapureté brand; or purchase any of their product range, please visit their website. And stay tuned, as I will be posting my review of the skincare range soon!

Couch To 5K

I’ve come to the realisation that when it comes to exercise – I need discipline. I need boundaries and a schedule and something to get me off of my butt and into my workout gear. When I leave it up to my own motivation it always tends to fall by the wayside. And this is why the Couch To 5K programme is suiting me perfectly. I am only required to workout 3 times a week (perfect) and with the C25K iPhone application taking the thinking out of the actual workout – it’s all become so easy. All I really have to do is get my butt on the treadmill 3 times a week. And that is definitely possible. The Couch To 5K programme is basically a workout schedule that will have you running 5km’s (easily?) in 9 weeks. Week One is 3 x 30 minute workouts. A 5 minute warm up, 20 minutes of alternating 90 seconds of walking with 60 seconds running, and a 5 minute warm down. If you can remember this, and figure this out for yourself when working out – great! But if you’re like me and prefer to tune out and just let yourself run without thinking, check out the C25K iphone application. You can upload your own playlist so that you can listen to your own music, and there are audio alerts when you need to stop and start running, and when it’s time to warm down. If you are interested or planning on doing this please let me know how you go! I would love to hear about your progress, and how the programme worked out for you!

Guest Blog: Winter Beauty Essentials – Kirsten Carriol from Lanolips

Time for our third guest post from another beauty expert regarding their favourite winter beauty essentials. This time, it’s the lovely Kirsten Carriol – creater of the great Australian beauty brand Lanolips.

01: Lanolips 101 Ointment – I really truly do use it for EVERYTHING. Every single night before bed so my lips stay moist, dry nose, children’s dry cheeks and lips and I even add it to my normal moisturiser when my skin is really dry, before bed to wake up with dewy morning skin.

02: My new Lanolips Hand Balm Intense – I use it every night and every morning. Its definitely going to be too rich for some people, but not for me! I love the added rose oil and the protective layer of moisture that it leaves on the hands to keep them soft and hydrated.

03: St Tropez Tan – to make me look alive as I battle through Winter.

My favourite Winter tradition is cooking marshmallows and drinking cognac in front of our new fire pit we bought at Coco Republic a few years ago. So calming. You feel like you are 14 and going camping again.

Guest Blog: Fashion Weekend/Essie Nail Bar

You may remember a little while ago, I posted a competition offering tickets to visit Fashion Weekend in Sydney. These tickets were offered to The Belle Lumiere by Essie – one of the supporters of Fashion Weekend. I was unable to attend the event myself, being situated on the other side of the country – but thankfully my friend Maya was able to attend the event on behalf of The Belle Lumiere. Here is her guest blog…

Guest Blog: Fashion Weekend/Essie Nail Bar

From the 3rd till the 7th of May Sydney held its annual and 15th Royal Australian Fashion Week sponsored by Rosemount. The show was an opportunity for Australia’s well known and up-and-coming designers to showcase fashion collections in various categories including men and women’s ready to wear, couture, swimwear, high end street wear and accessories.

The following weekend as the fashion celebration continued throughout Sydney, Royal Australian Fashion Week gave fashionistas the opportunity to buy from some of the designers along with many others at Fashion Weekend. Held in the Royal Hall of Industries at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park, the venue was chock full of stalls set up to sell to the general public at heavily discounted prices (which I personally and gratefully took advantage of: HELLO my darling new leather handbag was $490 reduced to $190). Stalls contained racks of clothes, shoes, bags, skin care, nail polish, fragrances and accessories from labels such as The Cassette Society, Shoes of Prey, Billion Dollar Babes, Life With Bird and Meow Girl. Even Nintendo appeared, showing off their hot new DS machine and ever popular Wii Fit console).

One of the other popular stalls of the day belonged to Essie. Created by Essie Weingarten, the cult American nail polish brand has grown from its original 12 shade production into a 300+ nail polish shade, nail treatments, nail accessories, spa products, and lip glosses global company available in over 250,000 salons and spas in 95 countries. Fashion Weekenders were served by two delightful men who outlined that for a small fee you could select one of the many Essie colours [the choice of colour came from either a small mini pack of Essie colours (which I chose - It included a mini Angora Cardi, Midnight Cami, Mink Muffs and Pink Parka) , a colour from the back wall (which included one of each of Essie’s colour range) or a colour/top coat combination], then proceed to the nail bar and have a mini manicure done by one of the Essie nail girls who were there to paint and show you how to wear anyone of Essie’s extensive and fabulous colour range.

Essie was a clear favourite stand of the day, as the constant line of people waiting to get their nails done and the little Essie bags walking around the Fashion Weekend stalls could attest to. I should point out they were a favourite of the crowd and a favourite of mine. I got them to apply the shade ‘Angora Cardi’ on my nails and at the risk of sounding sensationalist; it is the most perfect nail colour in the world. It is long lasting (a big deal for me) and very wearable with most all colours.

I also think Essie should be commended for being a big presence at and contributing to Fashion Weekend. As an offshoot to Australian Fashion Week it’s fantastic to see an international brand supporting Australian fashion!

NOTE: Essie products are available for purchase from Australian online beauty site Adore Beauty.
