10 Day Cycle

First of all I just want to thank everyone who took the time to comment, email me or write to me on Twitter regarding my current family situation. Unfortunately life has a habit of dropping the floor out from underneath you when you least expect it, and it’s not always easy to cope. But I really think that sometimes you need to encourage yourself to do the things you love and the things that make you happy in order to keep moving through life in the hope that you will be able to cope with whatever you’re going through. Blogging and the online community are things that I get a lot of pleasure out of. I’ve been so lucky to meet some absolutely amazing and inspiring people through this little world, and I am making an effort to stay connected where possible. So although I won’t be around as often as I used to be (at least not for a while), I will do my best to post when I get the time.

I have been inspired by Laura at Life, Beauty, Laughter and her recent discovery of the ’10 Day Cycle’. (please take the time to visit Laura’s blog – she is such a lovely person, and her blog really reflects her wonderful personality.) I have decided to embark on these cycles myself, to try and take my mind out of what feels like a ‘long term slump’, and to attempt to focus on the here and now. (in 10 day bursts)

Book to read…

I’ve not had much time to read over the past week or so, so I’m hoping to get stuck into this book on my train ride to and from work this week. I find that is the best time for me to really lose myself in a book. Though if it’s a good one, I’m always disappointed when I reach my destination!

Movies to watch…

I have been lusting after Joseph Gordon-Levitt after seeing him in Inception, and 500 Days of Summer was recommended to me as a good film, so of course I went out and bought the DVD as soon as possible. I’ve also been dying to see Julia & Julia and my grandmother let me borrow her DVD so I am planning on watching that too when I get the chance.

Hair & Makeup Inspiration

I love this look in Liv. I have never been confident to rock the middle part, as I have quite a round face (the complete opposite of Liv really) but I’m hoping the soft curls/waves might soften it a bit. I am also loving the low-key makeup and pink lip that she has going on. Definitely something I can recreate easily.

Things to do…

Spend less time online, and more time with my family.

Buy a cherry tomato plant.

Ask for a week off of work.

Take my grandmother to the movies.

Hopefully I can achieve all of these things in the 10 day cycle. I am really looking forward to this, and can’t wait to see how I go!

The List – Mid Year Update

At the end of last year, I made a list of 10 things that I hoped to achieve in 2010. These were a mix of spiritual, physical and superficial things that I really felt like I could achieve in the space of 1 year. This was my original list of goals, with some notes to the side as to how much progress I’ve made towards achieving them…

01) grow and cultivate a pink rosebush – I’ve been to the nursery twice to find the perfect rosebush, and the first time I walked away empty handed, the second time (today in fact) I came home with basically everything but a rosebush! It’s really not the right time of year to be looking at them, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to go back in a couple of months time and pick one up to work on for the last part of the year.

02) learn meditation – I’ve not really made any progress with this goal at all. I received a Deepak Chopra CD for Christmas, but I haven’t been making the time to actually listen & work on my meditation skills at all throughout 2010. I will try to refocus on this over the course of the next few weeks.

03) learn to cook 5 beautiful dishes – I’ve not done too badly with this one, as cooking is something I do on a regular basis. I’ve managed to get 2 recipes basically perfected, so I just need to find 3 more that I want to work on. Luckily Masterchef has inspired practically the whole country to work on their cooking, so there are lots of interesting and easy recipes floating around at the moment!

04) work up my fitness to be able to run for 45 minutes without having to stop – Surprisingly this is the goal I would say I have under the most control. I’ve tried a few different fitness routines, but sticking to the Couch to 5K program has really done wonders for my stamina so far. I’ve had to backtrack slightly because of illness and a back injury, but having the plan basically all in place and ready to go without me having to think too much about it has really helped my motivation. Fingers crossed that if all goes to plan, in 6 weeks I should be at goal!

05) buy a pair of christian louboutin heels – I’ve made absolutely no progress with this goal at all. Oops! I will probably need to start saving soon, as my shopping budget does not really allow for $1000 shoes to be purchased on a whim. I’ll need to think about this, and figure out what I’ll need to ‘put aside’ each pay in order to afford a pair of Louboutins this year. Perhaps they could be my Christmas present to myself…?

06) grow my hair halfway down my back – Thankfully this is a goal that I really have to put minimal effort in to see progress, so it seems to be going quite well! I get my hair trimmed once every 8 weeks or so (which is a little longer than I technically should be waiting between trims, I know) and at this stage my hair is longer than it’s ever been in my life, and is sitting just under my shoulder blades. I think by the end of this year I should be able to achieve this goal quite easily.

07) decorate the bedroom properly – I still have quite a way to go with this goal, but I do have plans for a big furniture purchase in August of this year. My best friend and I have planned for an all day shopping trip, and I’m hoping that I find some lovely but rather inexpensive pieces for the bedroom. I also wanted to get some painting done, but I’m not sure how likely that is at this stage. Time will tell.

08) read 50 of the top 100 books of all time (I figure 100 is a bit much for 1 year) – I decided a little while ago that 50 books off of this list was basically impossible, as I’m not capable of reading 1 book a week and living my life as I do now. So I’ve decided to read as many as I like, but focus on the books from the list that I actually am really interested in reading. I’ve also allowed myself some books that aren’t on the list, because there have been a lot that I’ve come across that I’ve really been fascinated by.

09) join and regularly donate to a charity (the RSPCA) – This is unfortunately a goal that I haven’t gotten around to achieving. I have, however been making an effort notes instead of coins when the opportunity for charity presents itself. Which is pretty much once a week, as I work in the city, and there are always collections happening right outside the train station when I arrive in the mornings. I don’t feel like this is enough for me to count this goal as achieved, so I plan on looking a little more into RSPCA donations and what will suit my budget and lifestyle.

10) get my teeth professionally whitened – I’ve made no progress with this whatsoever. I was planning on asking my grandfather (who used to be a dentist prior to retirement) if it’s really necessary for me to get them whitened, or if a professional clean would suffice. I don’t have too many issues with yellowing or anything like that, so I’m thinking that a good clean might be enough.

It’s been over half a year now, and I’ve made some small progress with some of the items on my list, but others have fallen completely by the wayside. I am planning on making a conscious effort to work on the goals that I’ve forgotten about, or ‘put off’ until now. I’ll post my updates as I go, and hopefully I can get this all done before the end of 2010!

Guest Post: Winter Beauty Essentials – Emily from ‘The Love Of Pink’

Time for our sixth in a series of Winter Beauty Essential guest posts. This time we hear from Emily – my friend, and editor of the always hilarious beauty blog The Love of Pink.

I generally love winter in all its stormy anger and blistering cold, but I truly detest what it does to my skin! It bashes my hair and skin about and always seems determined to sabotage my beauty routines.

01: Trilogy Rosehip Oil – Oh, how I love this. I smear this all over my snout every night in winter to keep those dreaded flakes at bay. It works a treat! I rave about this to everyone. It keeps my skin all soft and supple and means my foundation won’t cake around my nose or perch awkwardly on any flakiness. It is truly heavensent.

02: Lanolips 101 Ointment – Oh hai, wondertube. I sound like a broken record when it comes to this stuff but that’s because it actually works. I’m not going to lie, I was rather sceptical of this when it first launched, as I had been faithfully using supermarket lanolin on my paws, ladyhooves and whereever needed before the REAL Lanolips came along. Boy, I ate some humble pie. This stuff is medical grade genius and you can smear it over cuticles, dry patches, weird rashes… Interesting TMI fact: I had an awful dry, itchy tiny patch thing on my neck recently – I put some Lanolips on and it cleared up overnight. Thank GOD. Don’t tell anyone, okay?

03: Pantene 3 Minute Miracle Treatment – This stuff really is a miracle – I have been loyal to this for so long now and always have a tube or two in the bathroom for emergencies. I beg you to spend three minutes of your time trying this stuff – you will not regret it! It is cheap as chips too. It makes my hair all soft and touchable and stuff. It’s so quick. Three minutes, honestly. I do a scrub while it’s in and then HEY PRESTO, my locks are better already. Magic!

I love baking in winter. Actually, that’s a lie, I love baking all year round (I have the sweetest tooth in the world). But in winter there is something so intensely soothing and comforting when that aroma fills the kitchen and the smell and warmth drift into the rest of the house. This winter I am going to master the perfect apple pie!

Product Review: Bloom Organic Rose Hip Oil

I often speak about how much I love Rose Hip Oil, it is one of my all time favourite skin care products and a must have in my beauty cupboard. Couple that with my recent and growing adoration for Australian cosmetics brand Bloom and I’m sure you can imagine that I jumped at the change to try out and review the new Bloom Organics Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil.

What is great about this product…

To me, rose hip oil is something of a miracle product. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, this powerful skin supplement “nourishes and hydrates your skin, improves skin elasticity, slows down new signs of ageing, minimises minor scars and promotes a smooth, soft complexion“. Rose hip oil can apparently be used day & night but I tend to only use it at night – and once every couple of days. Any more than that and it doesn’t seem to have the same effect for me. I’ve been using rose hip oil for about a year or so now, and the Bloom oil is definitely on par with my favourites. Bloom’s Rose Hip Oil is 100% Australian Certified Organic with no artificial fragrances, colours, parabens, animal testing, mineral oils, sulfates, silicones, or petro chemicals. Winner! The packaging of the Bloom Rose Hip Oil is the best that I’ve seen out of all of the different brands I’ve tried. In fact, their entire organic range has some of the prettiest packaging around at the moment.

What is not so great about this product…

The only problem I’ve ever come across with rose hip oil is the smell. And I hate to say it, but the Bloom organic rose hip oil definitely has the true “fishy” sort of smell that the product is known for. Those that have used rose hip oil before shouldn’t have much of an issue with it, but I think those that are new to the product should be aware that it does have quite a distinct odour that not everybody finds appealing!

The Bloom Organic Rose Hip Oil retails for $25 AUD for 15ml and can be purchased from Myer, David Jones , Bloom’s Flagship Store in South Yarra or online at Bloom Cosmetics.
