Other traditions that I try to do every year include Christmas dinner with my close girlfriends (at the same venue every year) where we hand out ‘secret santa’ presents to one another. Collecting unwanted/unused beauty products from co-workers, friends and family to donate to a women’s shelter on the weekend before Christmas. Christmas Eve mass followed by dinner with my family, my parents, my brother, sister in law and beautiful neice. Christmas day celebrations with my family, and then a boxing day BBQ where everyone swims in the pool, watches the cricket and generally recovers from the madness of the events of the month. I also like to drink and eat a lot but I figured that was a given. What are your favourite holiday traditions?
My first exposure to the haircare brand Alterna came many years ago when Kate Bosworth mentioned using their caviar range in an interview with InStyle magazine. So my interest was piqued and of course, despite my searching I could not find the brand available for purchase anywhere in Australia. The years passed and to be honest the brand slipped my mind – until I recently received an email regarding the Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Post Party Hair Rehab. My hair has been frazzled lately, which I am putting down to the fact that in my rushed pre-Christmas state, I’m not spending enough time nurturing it as I should. So this post party hair rehab sounded like something I urgently needed in my life. I’ve been using the shampoo & conditioner since receiving it a couple of weeks ago, and I am somehow still not finished the bottles (despite washing my hair every day) but I thought I would put my review up anyway. Firstly, the shampoo and conditioner both have a lovely citrus smell that is nice and invigorating during my 5am shower time. Also, the shampoo lathers up a LOT so you only need a small amount of product to go a long way. Now, after using the product for a few weeks now I have to admit that I do not think it is ideal for my hair type. I have thin hair (a lot of it) that is prone to oiliness that I wash every day because I am yet to master the art of taming it to be washed every couple of days. I noticed that after a couple of days of using this product in a row my hair seemed quite weighed down by product. The Alterna range uses caviar extract that contains omega 3 fatty acids that help to smooth down the hair shaft and promote shine. I’m not sure if this is the reason why my hair seemed ‘thicker’ than usual, but it’s my guess. Don’t get me wrong, my hair looked great, but it felt kind of strange and heavy to me. I think the shampoo & conditioner would be better suited to people who have thicker hair than I, or who wash their hair on a less frequently than I do. I will post a review soon on the Overnight Hair Rescue – which I absolutely LOVE. The Alterna range is free of Parabens, Mineral Oil, Phthalates and other nasty things. The Alterna Caviar Moisture Shampoo retails for $37.95 AUD and the Caviar Moisture Conditioner for $39.95 AUD. Both products are available for purchase at high end boutiques and salons. For stockist information check the website. (note: I was sent this product for consideration for review)
Goal #76 of my 101 things to do in 1001 days is to attend 10 concerts. Last night I attended Jay Z/U2 here in Perth and it was phenomenal! The weather was perfect (though sadly I can’t say the same for those attending the show tonight, it’s overcast and raining occasionally) and the show was mind blowing. U2’s 360 degree stage was incredible and both acts performed like the top-of-the-game artists that they are.
Next on the agenda I have 2 concerts to attend in February and then freaking KINGS OF LEON in Sydney in March. YES. There are also rumours of Eminem touring next year, and if that is the case I will be going to every single concert of his that I can manage to get to. Also I’m still trying to get people together for Bob Dylan (at the West Coast Blues and Roots Festival) in April next year. Fun times ahead!
Glee star Lea Michele loves herself some NARS makeup. She seems to always be wearing NARS products on the red carpet, and she continued this trend at the Billboard 5th Annual Women In Music Awards. Celebrity makeup artist Fabiola used NARS products to create this look on Lea. To get the look, Fabiola used the following products: Skin Smoothing Face Prep, Bellissima Duo Eyeshadow, Coconut Grove Eyeshadow, Armour Blush, Laguna Bronzer, Little Darling Lipstick (limited edition holiday shade) & Chihuahua Lip Gloss (my personal favourite NARS lipgloss shade). NARS is available for purchase exclusively at Mecca Cosmetica within Australia. Now, when is Hollywoodland coming out?!
Another goal crossed off of my to-do list! Goal #62 for my Day Zero Project was to get my eyes checked. Which I managed to do over a week ago, and picked up my new Burberry specs yesterday morning. My old Prada style frames were lovely, but my lenses definitely needed an upgrade. Apparently one aspect of my vision has weakened while another has gotten stronger. I have absolutely no idea how that works, but what it meant for me was that my old glasses just weren’t cutting it anymore. Thankfully I can now see properly, and I’m hoping that my new glasses will put an end to the random headaches that I’ve been experiencing at work throughout the week.
As inspired by Stef’s post over at the newly refurbished The Lip Print, I thought I would write up a little post about Christmas, and the traditions that my family partakes in every year. I absolutely love Christmas, and I take great pleasure in annoying my family, friends and co-workers with my joy throughout the month of December. Step 1 – Novelty Christmas Mug for work.
Every year I buy myself a Christmas themed mug to take to work. The biggest mistake I ever made was definitely trying out the mugs that play music every time you lift them up to drink from them. Yeah, big mistake. Thankfully I made it out of the workplace alive that year. Step 2 – Decorate the tree.
Every year I like to choose a theme for the tree that was different to the year before. Last year we had blue and silver decorations. This year, we opted for red and silver. It is also necessary to play Bing Crosby Christmas carols as loud as possible during the trimming of the tree. This is a tradition carried over from my childhood, which I will embrace for the rest of my life because it brings me so much joy. Step 3 – Christmas movie nights.
Sunday nights in December are dedicated to favourite Christmas movies. Home Alone, Home Alone 2 & Elf are all watched in the lead up to Christmas. (usually accompanied by takeout food and a beer, a lovely indulgence before a busy week at work) I wish Home Alone had a soundtrack, I would download it/buy it in an instant. SO many great carols in that movie. Step 4 – Christmas shopping day.
As I mentioned in a previous blog post, every year I book a day off of work to dedicate to Christmas shopping. This way I can take a day off of work to enjoy myself while shopping, and get everything crossed off of my list at the same time. It makes the whole gift buying experience a lot more fun, and a lot less stressful. I try to take care of things before they become a problem in my life, and this is my way of avoiding having to rush around like a mad chook at the shops buying last minute gifts. I generally spend this day with my mum too, and we stop and have lunch or a coffee and that is another lovely aspect of the day that I look forward to. Step 5 – Get crafty.
That is a mintie wreath if anyone is wondering what the heck is going on in that picture! I love baking, and creating at Christmas. My favourite thing to do is bake Christmas cookies, but as I didn’t have a decent picture of them this year, the mintie wreath will have to do! I posted the recipe for my favourite Christmas sugar cookies here last year, so take a look if you’re interested in making them for yourself!
