Product Review: Firebird Brown Sugar Perfume Oil

Every time I use this perfume I get Brown Sugar by The Rolling Stones stuck in my head, which is absolutely fine by me. I’m terrible at describing scents so I’ll let Brooke from Firebird (previously Flourish) do the leg work: “The scent of brown sugar, mellow and sweet, joined by coconut, vanilla and sandalwood. Soft, gentle and comforting.” Firebird scents have this amazing way of smelling exactly the way they’re described. This perfume is no exception and smells exactly like brown sugar. It’s creepy and amazing and I love it. It lasts just as long as the other Firebird fragrances on the skin, but I do have to note that I can only use these perfumes on my wrists as they seem to irritate the skin on my neck. If you’re willing to work around this, I highly recommend all of the Firebird perfumes and if you’re looking for a new perfume for the season I suggest heading over to their store to check out what is on offer at the moment. The Firebird Brown Sugar Perfume Oil retails for $10.22 AUD and is available for purchase from the Firebird Etsy store.

Product Review: Burt’s Bees Milk & Honey Body Lotion

I recently ran out of my favourite body lotion, and despite the burning temptation to rush out and buy a replacement I decided to be smart and use up some of the products I already own. First up is Burt’s Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey body lotion. I’m fussy when it comes to body lotion in the fact that I can’t stand products that have overpowering fragrance. This lotion does have a scent but it’s subtle enough that I’m more than happy to wear it day-to-day. It moisturises nicely and sinks into my skin quite fast (I apply my lotion straight after blow drying my hair before styling my hair so that it has enough time to sink into my skin before I get dressed for the day) and doesn’t leave any greasy residue. This is a mid to lightweight lotion so if you’re in need of some heavy duty moisturising you might want to try something a little bit richer. The Burt’s Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion retails for $19.95 AUD and is available for purchase from Echolife. (note: this product was sent for consideration for review)

Summer Polish Picks

The weather hasn’t exactly been typical for an Australian summer lately, but despite this I went ahead and pulled out my favourite summer nail polish shades in preparation for hot weather and sunshine. My top 5 favourite summer shades are: Essie Pink Parka, China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy, Bloom Zooey (perfect for New Years Eve), OPI Big Apple Red (I’ve had this on my nails since the beginning of December and I can’t see myself changing it anytime soon – it’s the perfect Christmas red) and OPI Gettin’ Miss Piggy With It.

Top 5 LUSH Products

Buying LUSH products was always a rare treat for me because I could never be bothered driving to the other side of Perth to go to the store, but now that LUSH has opened up in my favourite local shopping centre I am able to indulge in their goodies more often. I get really confused when I walk into a LUSH store because everything looks so appealing but I’m pretty fussy when it comes to product fragrance so thankfully I don’t get tempted to buy absolutely everything in sight. I know how hard it is to whittle down a LUSH wishlist so I thought it might be a good idea to share with you my favourite products. Add these to the very top of your shopping list:

Sympathy For The Skin“Generous banana custard body cream. Eleven years old and still as popular as ever, Sympathy for the Skin is probably the only banana custard body cream in the universe, and almost definitely the only one with real, organic mashed bananas in it. We use real bananas to make skin softer, even if they’re a bit of a menace to mash. Smooth our nutritious cream all over your body and go absolutely bananas.” This is my favourite body lotion. It’s lightweight but moisturises the skin really well and has a very subtle sweet milky scent to it.

Big Shampoo“Sea salt shampoo for shine, softness and big endowments. This pot of oceanic goodness is 50% sea salt to give limp hair the volume it deserves, with seaweed infusion to soften and fresh lime juice for shine. After using Big, your hair will be bouncing back to life.” This is my new favourite clarifying shampoo. It does a great job of cleaning all of the excess product out of my hair without stripping it and my hair feels nice and soft after I use it. I tend to use this once a week, but it’s gentle enough that it’s safe to use it more than that if I feel like I need it.

Bohemian Soap“The mind-clearing lemon one. Bohemian soap is one of our simplest and most beautiful creations; we make it for those with a creative streak to help them to realise their masterworks. Do you work late into the night, then forget to get up in the morning and miss your deadlines? The lemon oil in Bohemian serves many purposes. It clears and refreshes the mind to invigorate you. It is cleansing and toning for the skin, so it really will keep artistic types clean, even if you can’t afford a hot bath very often.” This. Smells. Amazing.

Porridge Soap“Start the day the Goldilocks way with a helping or three of porridge oats. Ideal for sensitive skin; irresistible to everyone else. Oats are soothing for the skin and will gently exfoliate, while orange juice is refreshing and naturally toning. Rise and shine with some delicious porridge.” I love this soap for the smell and how gentle it is. It’s not particularly moisturising, so if you have especially dry skin I wouldn’t suggest you try this.

Mask of Magnaminty (not pictured) – “Deep cleansing, minty face and back pack. After an overnight flight, a marathon in a rabbit suit or a walk along the Marylebone Road during rush hour, do you feel a deep need to be scrubbed clean? Here’s a cleansing mask to do exactly that; China clay and bentonite gel will pull the dirt from your pores, ground aduki beans and evening primrose seeds exfoliate surface skin cells, and peppermint oil will make you feel so fresh and minty that you’ll forget you were ever grubby.” This is one of Liv Tyler’s favourite face masks, and if that isn’t enough to make you run out and buy it I really don’t know what else to say.

For years I was someone who owned one perfume and wore it day in day out, but somewhere along the line with this beauty blogging business I’ve managed to accumulate the collection you see above. This is way more than I’d like (or need) to own, so I plan on culling it and using up as much as I can. The perfumes that I tend to wear the most are the Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille (though in the warm weather I tend to wear this at night for special occasions only) and the Firebird Almond Milk and Sugar perfume oils.
