April Favourites

April is ending – where is my life going?! Argh, stress stress stress. Thankfully I have these great products in my life to make me forget my woes for now. Ha. My favourite products in April were: Revlon Colourstay Foundation in Ivory (for oily/combination skin). I very rarely try new foundation but I was browsing through products at the store and the shade of this looked quite promising in the bottle and as luck would have it, it’s close to a perfect match on my skin. Now, wouldn’t it be great if we were charged the US rate of $12 for this foundation here instead of $40 so that choosing a “drug store” foundation actually mattered? Korres Tinted Lip Butter in Pomegranate. I love me a tinted lip butter and this one is gorgeous. A subtle shade of rosy red, this is a fruity smelling pot of delicious. MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Porcelain Pink. This is one of my shop-my-stash re-discoveries and I’m so glad that I dug it out and can re-live my love for this product. I obsessed over it after seeing Pixiwoo use it in a tutorial once and it’s a beautiful highlighting pink shade with a hint of gold. I like to gild my face as much as the next gal but it can be hard to find gold shades that suit my skin tone. This is pretty much perfect. Original & Mineral Seven Day Miracle Moisture Mask. This is another re-discovery for me, and it’s the hair treatment that I’m currently making my way through for Project 50 Pan. It smells like a caramel milkshake and if I didn’t value my life as much as I do I’d probably drink the whole container. I’ve been using this on the ends of my hair while conditioning with my regular conditioner, as I am too lazy to go and get a trim.

My Skin Care Routine

I had originally intended to write up an Autumn/Winter specific skin care routine, but then I realised that a lot of the additional products I’m using at the moment are things that I’m attempting to finish for Project 50 Pan and not necessarily products that I like. I have a pretty good grasp on the basics that I like to have in my skin care routine, and I tend to rotate these products along with others that I may want to try out or things that I receive for review along the way. So without further ado, here are my ‘holy grail’ skin care products. Buckle up because this post might get long-winded and a little bit ranty.

Pre-Cleanser
I use the double cleansing method, which basically means that I use two products to cleanse my skin; one to remove my makeup and one to really get in and do the nitty gritty cleaning. I have used Dermalogica Precleanse for years, and it will always be the first product I reach for as pre-cleanser. (note: I also really like the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and the Nivea Daily Essentials Fragrance Free Facial Cleansing Wipes – which incidentally are the best wipes I’ve ever used on my sensitive skin)

Cleanser
Finding a good cleanser to suit my temperamental skin has been on-par with difficult levels as finding a decent foundation that won’t oxidise and give me pumpkin face. Thank goodness for Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. I love this stuff, so much so that I now buy it in the mega sized pump bottles to ensure that I’m never without it. (note: I also love the Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser, and I alternate this with the Dermalogica cleanser every now and then)

Exfoliant
Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant is one of those skin care products that people either love or they hate. I love it and would totally put a ring on it. It’s not pictured above because I recently ran out and I’ve been trying to use up my second favourite exfoliant, the Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub instead. I exfoliate twice a week and if I’m using the Daily Microfoliant I opt to use it in place of my regular cleanser.

Toner
I’ve nearly always used a rose mist in place of a regular toner, and my favourite is the Echolife Rose Facial Mist. Toners are generally used as a last ditch attempt to remove any impurities and also to tone the skin (ha), but as I use the double cleansing method I find that a mist is better suited for my routine. (note: I also really like the Kora Balancing Rose Mist and The Body Shop Aloe Calming Toner)

Moisturiser
As with cleanser, I’ve struggled to find a decent moisturiser to suit my skin. The Dermalogica Active Moist is probably the best match I’ve found so far. It’s lightweight and non-greasy and I’m able to use it throughout most of the year except for in the dead of Winter when I mix it up for something with a bit more oomph. (note: I also love the Ultraceuticals Ultra Moisturiser Cream, Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream and the Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Cream)

Eye Cream
I haven’t really found an eye cream that I’m madly in love with, but the Benefit It’s Potent! Eye Cream has been getting a heavy workout in my current routine. I haven’t included it in the picture above because I’m not completely certain that it’s HG material, but it will do for now. I tend to use eye creams for their moisturising ability rather than any of their much promised age-defying qualities. Hopefully I won’t look back on this in 20 years time and regret it. (note: I also like the This Works Tired Eye Serum)

Oils & Serums
I use oils and serums as a night treatment (in place of moisturiser) every couple of days, or depending on when I feel like my skin needs a boost. The Kosmea Organic Rose Hip Oil has been my favourite for years, but I’ve recently discovered the Weleda Almond Soothing Facial Oil which I find to be just as good. I’ve also recently rediscovered the Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster which has been an Autumn/Winter favourite of mine for a few years. (note: I also love the Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Serum)

Masks
I’ve never really been faithful to one particular mask because I like to try different ones for different skin concerns, but my most reached for face masks would definitely be the Astara Blue Flame Purification Mask and the Dermalogica Skin Refining Mask. I also really love the LUSH Mask Of Magnaminty, but it’s such a pain to get to a LUSH store that I haven’t had one on hand for a long time.

Spot Treatment
Despite being 27 years old I still battle with breakouts (in particular hormonal breakouts aka the bane of my existence) and the best products that I’ve found to combat these are the Burt’s Bees Herbal Blemish Stick (wonderful if you can get past the intense licorice smell) and the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion (a cult favourite of a lot of beauty fans).

So that’s it, my holy grail list of skin care products. I’ve probably forgotten quite a few things but oh well. Please feel free to leave me a comment suggesting any of your favourite products that you feel like I might need to try out in the future.

March Favourites

Aside from the nail polish that I literally wore throughout the entire month of March, I really struggled to find products that I would consider favourites. March, as it seems, was as blah as always. Nevertheless I managed to rustle up a few of my most-used products for the month, and they were: Flourish Bath & Body Almond Milk Body Lotion, OPI for Sephora Metro Chic Nail Polish, Flourish Bath & Body Brown Sugar Perfume Oil, Maybelline Master Precise Liquid Liner & Davroe Lemon Grass Detangler.

February Favourites

A fitting end to Summer, with my February favourites all bright and shiny and fresh. I used these products consistently throughout the month of February, and now I’m ready for the cooler months to start settling in so I can dig out my favourite Autumn/Winter products. My favourites in February were: Bath + Body Works Aruba Coconut Body Lotion, MAC Face & Body Foundation in N1, MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study, Bloom Nail Polish in Flamingo Sands & CO Bigelow Blueberry Rose Salve.

January Favourites

Belated favourites, again! My most reached for products during the month of January were: Maybelline Instant Rewind Concealer in the shade Fair, Haus of Gloi Pumpkin Butter in Litchi Milk Tea (so much so that I used the whole jar up), Revlon Lustrous Lipstick in the shade Temptress, China Glaze nail polish in the shade Flip Flop Fantasy & MAC Blot Powder in Light.

December Favourites

December is always a busy month, what with me being COMPLETELY F*CKING OBSESSED WITH CHRISTMAS and all. I love Christmas, just ask anyone in my life and they will no doubt regale you with tales of how I baked them cookies and made them listen to that one Bing Crosby Christmas album three thousand times. Due to me being so busy with Christmas, I tend to keep things in my routine pretty simple and use less of a variety when it comes to beauty products than I normally would. My most reached for products in December were: Bath + Body Works Twisted Peppermint Body Lotion (I use this exclusively in December so now it will always remind me of Christmas… perfect), Muppets for OPI ‘Gettin Miss Piggy With It’ Polish (this makes for a great Christmas nail when layered over OPI Red), Bloom Lip Gloss in Shine, MAC Eyeshadow in Orb & Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso aka the most perfect blush to exist, ever.

Top 11 in 2011

I have seen these posts popping up on a lot of my favourite blogs, so like the good little lemming that I am I decided to do one of my own. It was surprisingly hard to cull down my lists of favourite products from this year to just 11, but I managed to do it in the end. So without further ado and in no particular order, my top 11 products of 2011 are:

Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille Fragrance – This is without a doubt my favourite perfume of all time. I am terrible at describing scents, but to me this smells like a warm smoked vanilla (aka my ultimate fragrance), and the lasting power of Serge Lutens perfumes are second to none.

Flourish Bath & Body Sugar Perfume Oil – As I mentioned in my review of this perfume, it is probably the most highly complimented scent I’ve ever owned. For the low price, the quality of the entire Flourish Perfume Oil range really can’t be beaten.

Benefit They’re Real Mascara – Probably the biggest mascara release of the year in terms of beauty blogging status, and well worthy of the hype in my opinion. Though I rarely stray from my all time favourite mascara (Lancome Hypnose), this will definitely be a staple in my makeup bag moving forward into 2012.

NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Carthage – This was probably my most-worn lipstick in 2011. One of the first bright lipsticks I’ve ever owned and now I don’t think I could live without it. Perfect on pretty much any skin tone, this hot pink is a must have for all, in my opinion.

MAC Eyeshadow in Orb – Without a doubt the best neutral eyeshadow colour I’ve found to match my skin tone. As always, the MAC eyeshadow quality is amazing and lasts well throughout the day. A new holy grail item for me.

b collection by Bloom Cheek Tint in Yarra Valley – This was a completely random, spur of the moment purchase in Target on one of my trips to Sydney but boy am I glad to have discovered this blush. Pretty, pretty, pretty.

Biotherm White D-Tox BB Cream – BB Creams were a big thing in my life for about 2 months this year, but then all of the attention seemed to peter off a bit. The BB cream product that stood the test of time for me this year was this one. From what I’ve seen it’s received mixed reviews from people so definitely try before you buy.

Bath + Body Works Twisted Peppermint Body Lotion – After using the Twisted Peppermint scented anti-bac hand gel earlier in the year I was determined to try out the body lotion this Christmas and it did not disappoint. If you’re a fan of sweet peppermint scents this is a product for you.

Echolife Floral Facial Mist – A new discovery for me, but a welcome one. I’ve been trying to find a rose mist that I love as much as the Kora one but at a much more affordable price point and this is it. Not only is the product lovely, but the packaging is beautiful.

NP Set Calming Pre-Foundation Primer – The only product (except maybe Clarins’ Beauty Flash Balm) that has ever swayed me towards being a fan of facial primers. An absolute must-have for girls with red undertones in their skin. But be cautious and use sparingly because the product does contain a slight shimmer.

Lanolips Lip Ointment in Sunshine – My favourite gloss this summer. Want subtle, glossy, orange/coral lips? This is the product for you.
