Brown Eyes: Bountiful Brown eyes can carry pretty much any colour, however you will find that your skin tone will play a role in which colours suit you best. From personal experience the following colours look exceptional on brown eyes

- Electric Blue (darker/olive skintones)
- Green (darker/olive skintones)

Napoleon Perdis Divine Marchesa Eye Quad $49 Why? The colours are brilliant. You can achieve so many looks from this palette, and the black is easy to blend (always something I look for).

What is great about this product…

First of all, the scent. It’s beautiful. The gentle and refreshing rose scent takes me back to happy memories of spending time with my great grandmother in her rose garden. Every time I use this product I feel happy. (This might just be because of my own scent-induced memories, but it’s still a pleasant experience.) The mist is light and refreshing and leaves skin soft and supple. I use it before moisturiser and also as a refreshing spritzer throughout the day. (try popping it in the fridge on a hot day) I took a bottle with me when travelling overseas, and it was a lifesaver during and after a long flight! The packaging is streamlined and simple, as I’ve come to expect from Australian company Jurlique.

At $23 AUD for 30ml it is quite pricey for a Rosewater mist. Having said that, the quality continues to bring me back to this product time and time again.

It’s a good idea to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to bathroom storage, because a lot of the options available are just not what you’re looking for. I found my makeup storage containers in the home office section (I preferred the grey/taupe colours) and my bathroom cupboard storage containers are from the laundry section.

I keep my weekly products in a container on the bathroom cabinet (in picture #1) – everything that I’ll be using for the week goes in there. My bathroom cupboard is organised into hair care, body products, skin care & a spare container holds all of my samples/nail products. (picture #2). My makeup is organised into different catagories in two different drawers. The top drawer includes face (primer/foundation/concealer), cheeks (blush, bronzer, highlighter), lips (gloss, balm, lipstick) as in picture #3. The second drawer includes eyes (eyeshadow, liner, mascara) split into two different containers, and a seperate container for all of my brushes. (in picture #4) Speaking of which, I really need to streamline my brush collection. It’s all over the place at the moment!

eta: I should probably point out that as we have 3 bathrooms in our house, this is technically considered ‘my’ bathroom. I haven’t kicked the rest of my family out just to over run the place with my own junk!

Katerina’s choice for Blue Eyes:

Duwop makes some fabulous palettes for specific eye colours, Duwop Eye Palette The Browns and The Golds ($49 ea). Why? These palettes contain 4 eye shadow colors, a cream liner and double ended brush for easy application. There’s also a guide on the back which labels each colours use; base colour, lighten it, darken it etc. Worth every penny.

Napoleon Perdis Surreal World Prismatic Eye Shadow Quad ($49) are another favourite with highly pigmented shadows. 4, 5, 11 and 13 are suitable depending on the intensity of colour you choose to wear. (#11 is pictured) Why? The pigment in these shadows is fantastic. To be honest, I bought the entire palette just for the dark brown colour in the bottom left, but have been surprised at how much I use the others. They work incredibly well together and are easy to mix and much with other colours.

Becca Eye Colour (Powder Demi-Matte) in Linen $44 Why? Because of the way everyone scrunches up their nose when I say “orange eye shadow” but falls in love the minute they see this one. Aside from the superior quality (as with all Becca products) the colour is just hot. Has a soft shimmer through it and is brilliant enough to wear alone, and just as hot when smoked up.

So many colours, so many looks! Shimmer, glitter matte aargh, eye shadow can be confusing! As a makeup artist I am constantly asked, what eye shadow should I wear? So forget all the things you have previously been told, blue eyes should wear blue eye shadow etc. and embrace Katerina’s Complete Eye Shadow Bible. First and foremost, it’s important to clarify, that there are no hard or fast rules regarding colour. There are some combinations I thought would never work, but then in reality have looked amazing. However, if you really want to make your eyes stand out, there are particular products, colours and techniques you can use that will help you achieve this.

GETTING STARTED…..

Eye Primer/Base

Why? The eye lid is super duper oily, thus a lot of us find our eye shadow creases throughout the day, or even comes right off, and what a waste of all that glorious effort. A good quality eye primer is not only going to ensure that your shadow stays intact all day, but it will also bring out the true colour of your eye shadow. (Ever bought a seemingly brilliant coloured eye shadow only to get home, apply it and find it looks a little bleh? Yep, so have I.) I have listed a couple of little troopers that I have worked with and personally use myself. My honest opinion, I wouldn’t bother taking more than 30 seconds applying eye shadow if I haven’t got a base on.

Katerina’s choice of eye primers;

Benefit Stay Don’t Stray Eye Primer $45 Why? It’s also a primer for your concealer, to prevent it from falling into fine lines around the eye and creating lines and that “cakey” look.

Laura Mercier Eye Basics $42 Why? It’s oil-free, water-resistant and incredibly light, which is important when dealing with the eye area. It looks so natural, if you apply it to one eye, your other eye looks odd! Comes in a great range of colors to target specific discoloration concerns around the eye area.

Types of Eye Shadow:

Matte – Suitable for all ages, great for creating depth and smoky looks. Careful you don’t go looking all dull and Melrose Place with too much matte shadow on the eye. Can be a bit tricky to blend, especially darker colours.

Satin – Suitable for all ages, nice natural sheen compared to a matte shadow and generally easer to blend.

Pearl – Suitable for all ages, beautiful opaque finish but not glittery/shimmery.

Shimmer – Suitable for all ages, can be used with a matte to spice things up a bit. Shimmer not to be confused with glitter. Shimmer is much more refined, sheer and complimenting even on a mature skin. If you’re not too confident, use matte shadow colours with one shimmer.

Glitter – Has visible pieces of glitter throughout product. Can be super glamorous when used in moderation, mature skins, beware!

Cream – Beautiful texture, super easy to blend and create great looks quickly. Can be applied with the finger. Most will crease and definitely will require a good quality eye primer underneath. Gives that glossy, polished look.

Loose Shimmer – Gorgeous colour ranges, a wide range of effects can be achieved with loose shimmers. Bear in mind you must wear a primer underneath or most of the colour will fall off throughout wear.
