March Health & Fitness Chat

Time for another monthly roundup of where I’m at with my health and fitness. Guess what?! My stomach issues continue. I’m now on a third change of medication, and this combination seems to be working for me so far. I’m also “on the list” to have an endoscopy to try and see what’s going on in my stomach to cause all of these issues. Fitness wise, I have a renewed motivation after having cleared up most of the stomach pain I was suffering from recently. Onwards we go! Here’s how I did with my goals for February (hint: not very well) –

* work back into an 80/20 style of eating
* exercise three times a week (more like three times a month)
* continue to increase water intake
* cut back on after dinner treats
* increase workout time gradually to 45 minutes

So yeah, not great. I really need to knuckle down now, even if I’m not feeling well. It’s all a vicious cycle but I need to be in the best health I can possibly be to try and figure out what’s going on with my stomach. Here are my goals for March –

* try and get at least 10 stars in my workout diary for the month
* continue to track food on a daily basis
* cut down (a LOT) on sugar intake
* get better at prepping food to take to work
* make healthier meal choices based on food tracking

How is everyone else going with their health and fitness goals for 2015 so far?

September Fitness Chat

Well well well. Another month (nearly) over. We’ve been noticing a steady change in the weather lately, although we did still have a lot of rain and some storms on the weekend. That was a nice juxtaposition against the lovely 34 degree weather of the day before. Ahh, weather. Why you so crazy? As we head towards summer it’s a LOT easier to fit in a workout in the evenings, mostly due to it not being pitch black at 6pm. I’m looking forward to being back home this week so we can take full advantage of the beautiful weather.

August Goals
I have been using the treadmill, but not as frequently as I’d hoped. However, when I have been running I’ve felt the need to push myself further and try to beat my previous efforts. I really miss that feeling, and I look forward to having that back full-time soon. I have started the Lorna Jane Squat challenge, and am steadily making my way through it. I haven’t given up yet, so that’s a good thing. As for my health, I am pretty much back to feeling 100%, and it’s wonderful. I do need to go back to see my doctor at the end of the month to follow up, but we’re definitely on the right track with diagnosing what was wrong with me. Phew.

Monthly Goals
I decided to try to hit a caloric burn goal for the week, from Sunday through to next Sunday. I’m going to try and burn 1500 calories in a week (just during my specific workout times, not counting regular day-to-day calories burned, obviously), so fingers crossed I can reach my goal! I also want to continue with the Lorna Jane Squat challenge, and start planning for next month’s challenge. I want to stick to a healthy meal plan as best I can (we’re going out for dinner quite a lot lately, and have some big social events coming up), and cut out all unnecessary treats.

Eating Clean

Lately I’ve been obsessed with the idea of ‘eating clean’. So this morning I decided to bite the bullet and really get serious about it. I’ve been feeling more motivated than usual lately when it comes to eating well and getting fit, and my sister in law and I have signed up for boot camp/personal training together starting next week. I think that eating clean will certainly help me maintain the energy I need to get through 3 sessions of that a week, plus other general exercise, working full time, studying and generally attempting to live a good life.

So what is ‘eating clean’? There are plenty of websites and books available on the subject, but in a nutshell it’s basically eating the foods we all know we should be eating. Cutting out overly processed foods, refined sugar and alcohol and generally trying to eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. So if you’re eating pasta or bread, stick to wholewheat, rye or wholegrain products. It’s also recommended to eat 5 small meals a day while eating clean to keep your metabolism working. It’s all a matter of common sense really. I’ve set myself a personal challenge to eat clean for a week and see how I feel and how it effects my day to day life. Today was day 1, and I feel satisfied with everything I ate today. I wasn’t particularly hungry throughout the day, but I did find myself thinking more about food than I normally do. I think that was because I was planning things in my head, and making sure I was sticking to my plan. Just to give you an idea of what an eating clean diet might contain, today I ate:

Almond Milk, Blueberry, Banana & Chia Seed Smoothie

Wholegrain Ryvita Crackers w. Fresh Tomato, Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper

Tuna & Brown Rice Salad

Garlic Chilli Chicken, Sweet Potato Fries & Salad

I love how bright and appetising everything I ate today was. I certainly wasn’t disappointed by my food choices! I’m sure I could cut back even more on the processed foods that I’m eating, but I want to talk to my personal trainer next week about a food plan and what the best options for me and my lifestyle are. I also need to come up with some good options for meals throughout the day that I can take to work and are quick and easy to prepare. Has anyone else tried eating clean before? If so, do you have any tips for me?
