Book List

As I mentioned in a previous post, one of my goals for next year is to read 50 of the “100 Greatest Books” of all time. After looking through a couple of lists online and dismissing all that included the Twilight series I settled on Time Magazine’s selection.

So my first 25 choices from the list are as follows…

01: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey [read]
02: White Teeth by Zadie Smith [read]
03: The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon [read]
04: Atonement by Ian McEwan [read]
05: Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut [read]
06: The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood [read]
07: Call It Sleep by Henry Roth
08: The Death of the Heart by Elizabeth Bowen
09: Possession by A.S. Byatt
10: An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser
11: The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West
12: Neuromancer by William Gibson
13: The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
14: White Noise by Don DeLillo [read]
15: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
16: Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
17: The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing
18: Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
19: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
20: The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles
21: Beloved by Toni Morrison
22: Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
23: A Handful of Dust by Evelyn Waugh
24: Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
25: Naked Lunch by William Burroughs

I will update the list as I make my way through the books. I have already started reading One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Wish me luck!

‘The List’

I am a firm believer in goal setting, list writing and general organisation so when the concept of a “Bucket List” was brought up, I was instantly inspired. After my friend Cait called me a ‘morbid shite’ I decided to move away from the concept of a death list, and more towards 10 things I want to achieve in the next year. I will blog my progress, and probably ask for some advice along the way! Some of the things on my list may seem superficial, but I want to have fun with it too.

01) grow and cultivate a pink rosebush
02) learn meditation
03) learn to cook 5 beautiful dishes
04) work up my fitness to be able to run for 45 minutes without having to stop
05) buy a pair of christian louboutin heels
06) grow my hair halfway down my back
07) decorate the bedroom properly
08) read 50 of the top 100 books of all time (I figure 100 is a bit much for 1 year)
09) join and regularly donate to a charity (the RSPCA)
10) get my teeth professionally whitened

So far I have visited the rose nursery to check out the lovely standard roses, and have picked out possible paint colours for our bedroom. My first question to you all is – have you ever studied meditation? And if so do you have any advice for me? I would be interested in a good book/tape that might help me out in some way…
