3 Small Things That Changed My Life

This might seem like a bit of a strange post but when I put the call out on Twitter last week for post requests, Claire suggested that I write about books that changed my life. That was a tough one for me to answer, but I could think of three small things that changed my life that I can share with you all. I may come across as a bit hippy-dippy in this post, but so be it!

01: What the bleep to we know? This has a bit of a strange story behind. I was at a crossroads in my life, and a friend of mine kept raving about this ‘documentary’ and how it had changed his life. At this point in time it was not readily available to watch online, so I just tucked it away in the back of my mind for future reference. Soon after that I was browsing the TV guide and saw that it was showing that day in the afternoon. Which was too much of a coincidence for me to ignore, so I sat down to watch it. It may sound strange, but it was pretty much exactly what I needed to see that that point in time. I felt a bit lost, and the idea that I could help create my own future just by being positive and setting my intentions for the day was quite intriguing to me. So I tried it, and it worked for me.

02: This is Water by David Foster Wallace. My best friend let me borrow her copy of this essay/speech, and I’m so glad that she did. The underlying message of this story is something that we should all take on board. I try to re-read (or listen to) this every few months, because it helps shift my perception back to where it should be.

03: Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus by John Gray. I know, right? I didn’t read the whole book, but what I did made so much sense to me. If you’ve ever come across road blocks in your relationship in the area of communication – try reading the communication sections of this book. It helped me so much. It’s amazing for me to look at how I’ve been trying to communicate with my partner as I would like to be communicated with, but he needs something different. I’ve changed the way I communicate with Sebastian after reading this, and it all feels so much easier now.

If you have any little things that have changed your life that you’d like to share, I’d love to hear them!

Autumn/Winter To Do List

Because my Spring/Summer to-do list went so well (ha), I decided to write one up for Autumn/Winter as well. I LOVE winter, it’s my favourite season. I can’t wait for it to arrive – every cool(ish) morning or daytime temperature under 30 degrees celcius we have are giving me hope that it’ll be here soon.

– Make peppermint hot chocolate
– Perfect 3 new cookie recipes
– Go away for the weekend to celebrate Sebastian’s birthday
– Get a professional pedicure
– Paint the house
– Enjoy lazy Sunday mornings in bed and around the table (pots of tea, indulgent breakfast, books)
– Make big pots of soup every weekend
– Re-read ‘The Road’ by Cormac McCarthy
– Buy a nice new winter coat
– Learn how to make a great curry from scratch
– Spend rainy weekend evenings playing board games with the family
– Invest in a good hydrating face mask (and use it weekly!)

So that’s my list for this year, I’ll check in mid-season to let you all know how I’m going. In the mean time, I’d love to hear what little things you love to do in Autumn/Winter to make the most of the cold weather, be sure to leave me some suggestions in the comments below!

Spring/Summer To Do List Roundup

It’s probably quite unAustralian for me to say this, but I hate summer. I am not built for the heat, and I really do not enjoy that time of the year AT ALL. In early spring I decided to write up a list of all of the things I wanted to do to really make the most of my summer and to try and enjoy it for once. Here are the things that I wanted to try and do to bring a little bit of happiness to yet another awful summer –

– Buy a BBQ and an outdoor setting for the back yard
– Set up the outdoor area in the back yard
– Go for long drives on warm evenings
– Make iced tea to drink on the weekends
– Create a new cocktail recipe to drink on balmy summer evenings
– Swim as much as possible
– Go for walks along the beach
– Spend a weekend at Rottnest Island
– Go back down south to the family holiday home for a weekend

– Get a professional pedicure
– Perfect 3 new salad recipes
– Re-Read ‘all in the blue unclouded weather’ by Robin Klein
– Go for evening walks before (or after) dinner
– Work on perfecting a heat-free hairstyle for work
– Go to the royal show

As you can see, there were still a lot of items left unchecked off of this list. I managed to get all of the ‘big ticket’ items crossed off, so I’m happy about that at least. I’ll have a lot more free time next summer, as I’m taking 3 months off of work. Hopefully I’ll be able to achieve a bit more next year. Or I could just hide in the house enjoying the air conditioning for three months. I’ll keep you posted.

Dream Life Love List 2015

What is a dream life love list? You can read all about it here, but essentially it’s a list of things you do (or want to do) in your life that add up to your dream life. This is not a place for big picture items, this is a list of the day-to-day joys that make your life special. I wrote about my dream life love list a couple of years ago, and thought it was time for a bit of an update. Here are a few of the things on my dream life love list for 2015 –

I take care of things before they become a problem.

I go to the movies at least once a month.

Tea and water are my drinks of choice.

I listen to classical music on Mondays.

I make the time to read at least once every day.

I spend time with my family and focus on being ‘present’ during this time.

I practice daily affirmations.

I make the effort to catch up with my girlfriends at least once a month.

I work on projects around the house every weekend.

This is not the full list, but it’s a few that I thought I would share with you. I like to look back at the list from time to time throughout the year to kind of ground myself and remind myself what I love about my day to day life, and the little things that I’m trying to achieve to make myself happier. If you write yourself a Dream Life Love List, I’d love to hear about it!

Weekly Vlog – 16-20/02/2015

Look at alllllll that cat food. I thought I’d try my hand at filming a weekly vlog, which makes more sense for me to do than daily vlogs as I spend the majority of my time at work (which would be incredibly boring footage and certainly not worth capturing). So here it is, the very first weekly vlog. I don’t know how often I’ll be doing these, I mostly did this one because I was by myself for the majority of the week, and had plenty of free time to fill. I’ll see how I go, and if you’d like to see more vlogs like this in the future, please let me know!
